A Wave of Vintage Armani Searching
Since the passing of Italian fashion legend Giorgio Armani at age 91 on Thursday, second-hand markets have witnessed a dramatic surge in interest for his vintage designs. Searches on platforms like Vinted, Europe’s largest resale marketplace, nearly tripled, while luxury resale site The RealReal reported a staggering 212% increase in search activity. Google Trends also recorded a spike for searches of "vintage Armani," especially in Italy and the UK.
Market Listings on the Rise
On Vestiaire Collective, users across Europe began listing Giorgio Armani items shortly after news of his passing. Among these were a 1990s black silk blazer priced at £245 (approximately $331) and a 2002 leather and rabbit-fur jacket listed at £571 (around $771).
The Retro Revival and Scarcity
According to Ammar Boulai, owner of the luxury second-hand menswear boutique Chez Ammar in Paris, demand for suits from the 1970s and 1980s is rising sharply. He notes that these styles—once "impossible to sell" just a few years ago—are now highly sought after but increasingly rare. Armani’s extensive production and multiple sub-brands mean there are still pieces potentially lying undiscovered in wardrobes, which may now surface.
Why It Matters
This renewed interest reflects a broader fashion trend favoring retro styles—notably wide-leg trousers and fluid fabrics—typical of the '70s and '80s. Armani’s timeless aesthetic and the growing emphasis on authenticity in fashion fuel this vintage resurgence.
